Malbec Madness
South American malbecs are justly popular for taste and value. We have added four new malbecs in the last two weeks at great prices. I like them all, but they’ve delightfully different characters.
Viu Manent Secreto Malbec 2009, Colchagua Valley, Chile, $10.50: The label describes this intensely concentrated wine as “wild, dense, different, and deeply colored.” I would add peppery and smoky into the bargain. The Secreto line’s “secret” is that, while nominatively a varietal, each wine may contain up to 15% other blending grapes. This is a very fruit-forward and assertive wine that would accompany a large variety of strong flavors (pizza, game, red meats, full-flavored sauces). |
Andeluna Malbec 2009, Mendoza, Argentina, $10.50 (regularly $14.75): Still inky and concentrated, but less intense and more smoothly balanced across the palate than the Secreto, Andeluna offers deep fruits and soft tannins that would complement grilled red meats wonderfully. It would also do well with strong cheeses. |
Ruta 22 Malbec 2009, Patagonia, Argentina, $10.50: Made from grapes grown in the cooler climate of Patagonia, Ruta 22 is rich yet a little more austere than the other malbecs here–a little more reserved and European in character. While still vivid on the palate, it is less exuberant than either the Secreto or the Andeluna and would complement a wide range of flavors. |
Arido Malbec 2009, Mendoza, Argentina, $9.50 (regularly $12.25): A fun and very easy-drinking wine, Arido is soft, fruity, and sure to be a crowd-pleaser. If you like the deep fruit of malbec and prefer a wine with softer tannins, Arido will fill the bill. |
Veni, Vedi, Vici, Vini
The Kiva has added three Bulgarian imports to the wine aisle. These come from Vini, the largest supplier of Bulgarian wines to the US. Vini wines are produced and bottled in the Thracian Valley, an area with a history of viniculture dating back a thousand years. Line priced at a remarkable $7.50, I was very impressed by the quality and varietal character all three wines exhibited. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Sauvignon Blanc, all three are an exceptional value.
